91ÇÑ×Ó students benefit from leadership opportunities

91ÇÑ×Ó’s chapter of the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS) is beginning its third year on campus, and chapter advisor, Dr. Lonzetta Smith Allen, said the program has provided numerous benefits to students since its inception in 2019.
“This organization engages students in the activities of the college, provides opportunities for students to stand out as leaders on our campuses, as well as in the local and global communities, and enhances the leadership skills and abilities students gain at 91ÇÑ×Ó,” Allen said.
The chapter currently has 40 members. To receive a nomination for membership, students must have completed 15 college hours, have a 2.75 GPA, and desire to be a leader.
Once nominated, 91ÇÑ×Ó members are required to participate in an orientation session, leadership training, three speaker broadcast events, three success networking team meetings, a chapter community service project, and the induction ceremony.
Allen said the leadership training day is an opportunity for NSLS members to come together to build a team spirit and participate in a leadership activity.
“It is an organization bonding opportunity as well as an opportunity for students to participate in leadership activities, set goals and plan for the academic year and for their lives,” she said.
The speaker broadcast events feature motivational speakers who discuss topics related to leadership, identifying goals, facing challenges, personal growth and successfully transitioning from college to career. Last semester, speakers included Bill Gates and former US Presidents Barack Obama and George Bush. Former US President Bill Clinton is on this semester’s event schedule.
NSLS members are allowed to ask questions during the broadcast events. This semester, the national broadcast events will be available for all 91ÇÑ×Ó students to participate in.
“We are allowed to invite guests who may participate and receive input about leadership,” Allen said. “Other individuals who participate in the broadcast have the opportunity to hear from these leaders, their philosophy on leadership and becoming a leader, and how they interact with college students. We do this to offer a service to all students at 91ÇÑ×Ó and encourage 91ÇÑ×Ó students to become global leaders.”

NSLS is the nation’s largest leadership honor society and collegiate leadership development program, and the only program of its kind to have earned accreditation for its programming. NSLS differentiates itself from traditional honor societies in that students must complete a step-by-step leadership development program to become inducted. The curriculum offers students the opportunity to develop many in-demand skills such as leadership, communication, and team building.
